Just recently I was searching for a house to start an orphanage in and had much difficulty. You can go to an agent, but he is only going to show you houses belonging to his clients. And in the context of Nakuru I would rather deal directly with the owner of the house.

This actually ties in with something we’re building – a wiki page called “The Idea Portal” – basically it’s a portal of all the ideas we get, but can’t implement for various reasons. I’ll link to this.

Publicizing them will hopefully get other people with ability to implement some of these good ideas.

Neville – I so believe the social side is the main route to growing out local content. Right on.

Does local content mean site relevant to a particular location, or does it mean that the site is physically hosted at a particular location or both.

ISPs could potentially save international bandwidth costs by aggressively promoting creation of local content, hosted locally. With a critical mass of locally hosted websites, they would be able save costs by encouraging their clientèle to use local (locally hosted) websites which would typically be less costly to access.

This of course requires quality and affordable hosting services locally that are comparable to those offered abroad.

Since I am mostly interested in the social side of web apps what do your readers think of this idea: Get your users themselves to build up the database. So in your example of creating a price comparison site, let the users submit the data. For example, “I bought brand X at shop Y for price Z”. If there is mutual benefit in submitting accurate data then people will keep it accurate and now you have killed two birds with one stone.

Local content is what generates traffic, and with narrowing international traffic that currently still depends on an expensive satellite connection, it’s just logical to come up with your own content within the local network.

As for that Nokia deal: hehehe…go, Nokia, go! Now they’ll only need to improve the firmware of their devices and get a serious team of “PC Suite” developers 🙂
