whereyoudey.com just deployed an Android mobile App. This definitely puts nigeria on top of the scale, all those other app are non value added. It’s apps like that definitely show maturity in the development space.

I think there are uncapped plans – Safaricom should add up to about KES 4,000+ per month(999/= for seven days). AFAIK, most plans are bundle based and so apps like 3G watchdog are important in monitoring usage.

You can also pay with your debit/credit card here but I believe the billing is in USD and forex rates in Kenya are generally ridiculous (or unpredictable). Carrier billing would definitely help in offsetting these charges and improve access to the store.

Oh, and one more: how about an app from the carrier that turns airtime into credit for a local app store? Because the big advantage I always see with iOS is the availability of vouchers which are for sale even in supermarkets while vouchers aren’t available for (the various) Android markets. How does this work in e.g. Kenya?

(in Germany, you’ll need to connect your credit card to the Android store which means you’ll often have to pay another 1.85% on each app purchase).

When will carriers create their own AppStores with carrier billing via mobile money? The pieces are there. I see a future where each carrier will create their own branded AppStore loaded on the android phones they subsidize and make it really easy for developers to connect with consumers. Having a free android app or web app essentially means Africa wide scale is required to make it a business. Carrier android marketplace billing allows a narrower but “paying” audience.
