Wed, 30 Jan 2013 06:24:02 +0000http://whiteafrican.com/?p=4674#comment-10276this made me think about a recent article I read regarding deforestation in Brazil I think – there the trees was getting equiped with some sort of device, then when the tree was cut down and got within range of a cell-tower then it would alert the authorities about it’s location. Making it easy to catch deforesters redhanded.

Conservation has been a passion of mine for a very long time, as you know, and I’m currently working with Fauna & Flora International to revisit how ICTs could be used in conservation. Community reporting and messaging (mostly via SMS), GIS and UAVs are among the many tools available, but figuring out which problems they might best solve is the tricky bit. We should talk some time!

What about location data generated by the phones the poachers use? Although I also see the problems being on the data usage side, less on gathering that data. And with poor reception anyways, triangulation may not work that well?
