PayPerPost: Make Money Blogging OR Get Advertising Results

[Disclosure: I know the guys behind PayPerPost since it was a spinoff company from the agency I used to work at. This has put me in a unique position to see the inner workings of the company. I also am a blogger and advertiser, which allows me to speak from an actual “users” standpoint on this product – unlike many naysayers who only blog]

PayPerPost - Make money bloggingOne of the common themes you run across within the blogosphere is the tradeoff of time spent blogging and the payoff for your time. If you’re a great blogger that writes things that people like reading, then you’re off to the races with companies knocking at your door for advertising space, sometimes willing to pay up to $10,000+ per month for that 125×125 ad. If you’re a good blogger with a lot of pageviews, you might go the route of Google AdSense and get some money that way.

For those in the second category, and the “ordinary” blogger, there’s not much else. This summer Ted launched PayPerPost, a platform that allows advertisers to put forward opportunities for bloggers to write about. An advertiser might pay $7 for you to write a 200 word post about their product. Usually they just want a straight and honest review. As the blogger, you can do a couple of these each week and easily make up to $100/week. Not bad for us ordinary blokes!

Now, PayPerPost has a ton of controversy surrounding it. Why? Mainly because the alpha bloggers around the web believe that it pollutes the blogosphere – taints its purity if you will. There’s all types of finger pointing about how this is a conflict of interest, and that you don’t come to blogs to read advertising. I guess it’s just interesting reading that type of comment from bloggers that take advertising and write about those same products.

PayPerPost - Top Earners (as of November 6)You make the call on whether you think it is right for your blog. I know that if I was looking to make some money off of my blog, that I wouldn’t hesitate to pick up on one of the many opportunties within PayPerPost. If I was living in Africa, was a stay-at-home-mom, or just wanted to make a couple hundred bucks each month, I would definitely do this. I can see the top earner so far has made $2,700.

Why PayPerPost Will Work
There are a couple reasons actually. First and foremost, remember how everyone cried about putting paid search results on the search engines? Well, Google figured out a way to create a platform for advertisers and websites that allowed ads in search results and on people’s personal webpages. They make a lot of money on that – it worked.

Second, advertisers are struggling to find ways to reach increasingly niche and dis-established groups. Old media isn’t holding peoples interest anymore – they need/want to reach people at a more personal level. Bloggers are their ticket, PayPerPost will be their platform.

How do I know this? I’m a marketer. I’ve tried PayPerPost. It works. Here are my results for one test campaign that I did a couple weeks back for my eBay sales tool List’d:

List'd on PayPerPost - Results

So, for about $900 I was able to get over 41,000 people to view 100 blog posts about my product – not bad. Not shown here is the fact that List’d now shows up as the #2 result on Google’s search results for the term “listing tool”. As someone who knows a little about search engine marketing, I can tell you that that result is worth it’s weight in gold. We get a lot of registrations from that term alone each week.

List'd on Google - #2

Breach in Spam Security. Abort! Abort!

I’ve been using Spam Karma 2 for a couple months now, and it’s been a savior. As of today, it has caught 34,868 spam comments and trackbacks. Someone should give Dr. Dave a medal for creating this WordPress plugin.

However…

The last 4-5 days the spammers seemed to have cracked the code or found some hole in the security scheme. It seems to be centered around trackbacks. I had to delete over 20 today alone. Now, the funny thing is that many are still being caught – so I’m complaining because it is now only 80% accurate instead of 100%.

For the love of God, I hope someone fixes this before lose my mind.

Are any other SK2 users experiencing this?

Eppraisal.com Launches: Real Estate Valuations

I’m happy to announce the launch of another web application called eppraisal.com. It’s a real estate application that allows you to search 70,000,000+ properties in the US and get a quick snapshot valuation, demographics and recent home sales within the area. It’s been a long hard road to getting it up and completed (and there’s a lot more work to do before it’s actually out of beta).

eppraisal.com logo

What We’re Doing:
There already are a couple different websites that allow you to get property estimates for free. What I saw at the real estate conferences that I attended was a number of real estate professionals who were uncomfortable with this new technology. Most weren’t against the technology itself, it was more that they weren’t sure how to utilize it to help them in their own business. Sure, there are those who would rather kill any change than learn how to embrace and leverage it, but I don’t think that is the majority.

Instead, we decided to build this consumer-side application called eppraisal.com that would be married up to another application called eppraisal Professional. This would be the area that certified real estate professionals could come to get access to the technology that we were leveraging on the consumer-side. They could put all the power of eppraisal.com on their own website, and directly connect to real estate consumers through it.

Upcoming:
Next week I’ll be off at the National Association of Realtors (NAR) Conference in New Orleans for the launch of eppraisal.com and eppraisal.com Professional. If you’re there, you can stop by our booth (#2058) or shoot me an email to set a time to meet.

As with any project or application that I am involved with, I am very interested in your thoughts and feedback. Please shoot me an email at erik [at] eppraisal [dot] com or leave a comment here or on our blog at www.realtythoughts.com.

PollDaddy – Easily Add Polls to Your Blog

Polldaddy LogoI decided to give PollDaddy a spin today. It’s a free web-based tool that allows you to build a poll and gives you the code to place it on your website. This article is a test of that service and a review of the tool as I go through it.

Since I’m doing some stuff around the mobile phone industry, I wanted to ask everyone about how they use their phones. Vote below on what you use your phone for:

I’ve got to say that I’m really impressed with PollDaddy. It’s simple to set up a free account and equally simple to set up your polls. The part of the page that you build the answers in is very customizable and intuitive. All you do is double click on any line to start editing it (see image below).

PollDaddy - Answers

At this point you have the chance to use a custom look for your poll. I had not set this up in advance, so instead I picked one of the pre-made PollDaddy skins. You then copy and paste the code that they generate into your blog. Very simple.

5 Interesting Ugandan Blogs

For some reason I got on a kick looking into differnt blogs from around Africa. I was looking into Uganda recently… not for any particular reason. I don’t know any of these bloggers, but found them all compelling reads in their own way.

Uganda

I Left Copenhagen for Uganda
I recently came across this blog of a lady who is a Danish aid worker in Uganda. It really is a compelling read. I found myself spending altogether way to much time reading it. Take a look and see for yourself.

Mad and Crazy
By a man named Iwaya in Kampala, Uganda. He writes very openly and honestly. A good read.

Ivan Presents
Not sure how to best categorize this blog. It’s one of those blogs that will suck you in and cause you to spend more time reading than you should.

Uganda Watch
A watchdog blog on Uganda. Much like it’s sister site Sudan Watch, they focus on political, military and social unrest. Very interesting.

Deanna in Uganda
An Canadian expats blog.

There are more very good blogs from Uganda. In fact, there are two other blogs that I’ve read recently that I really wanted to add to this list, but I can’t remember their names for my life. Anyway, I’m sure they’ll come back to me and I’ll add to this list as soon as they pop up.

In an African Minute
Josh’s blog on technology and life in Uganda. (Thanks Lydie, this is one of the two that I forgot – crazy since I read it all the time). Here’s Josh’s list of top Ugandan bloggers too.

Celebrate: Vegemite Banned in US!

vegemite is disgustingAn Australian news site is stating that the US has banned vegemite. Thank god for that! If you haven’t tasted this oily swill before, just be glad that you have been saved the horrors. Vegemite, is closely aligned with Marmite in my mind – both are disgusting and are not fit for human consumption.

Here are some quotes on Marmite. Substitute in “Vegemite” everytime you see the word Marmite, and you’ll be right on target:

When I first came to this country I went to a friends house. He wanted a snack so he made himself some Marmite and toast. Being a naive yank and only 11 at the time I asked him what it was. He told me it was chocolate spread and gave me a spoonfull to try. Needless to say, I almost barfed on his toast.

I’ve never eaten it since and will never eat it again. It’s the most disgusting, vomit inducing, turd coloured paste you can imagine.

Marmite is hell on toast produced by the devils own satanic herd…

I breathe deeply, raise the toast to my mouth and bite.

That is not good. Not nice at all. It’s very salty and tastes vaguely alive. It’s like bad caviar blended into a paste. It tastes like the crust on a three year old bottle of Worcestershire sauce. The butter, it does nothing. I chew on. It doesn’t improve.

Marmite = Horrid English goop…. resembling axle grease. Made from dead animals.

As you can tell, I’m no lover of Marmite, Borvil, Vegemite, or any other greasy looking spreadable substance. If you have any great anti-Marmite or anti-Vegemite quotes or stories, please write them here. I think I’ll start a collection.

[Update: Unfortunately, it appears I could be wrong on this – Snopes Report.]

South African Dating Website

I first read about YesNoMayb.com on Springwise (which is a GREAT site by the way) late last week. Since then it’s popped up in all kinds of places like TechCrunch and Digg. The basic idea is that you submit your picture, others submit theres and there is some type of matching algorithm that shows you possible matches. You select “yes”, “no” or “maybe”. If the other person selects “yes” as well, then you’ll be connected. Very simple.

yesnomayb countries

yesnomayb.com is available in a number of countries, but surprisingly no African countries outside of South Africa. I guess that with their tiered payment service of free and premium ($18), they decided to go after the markets with more money first.

That’s good news for all of the web entrepreneurs in the other African countries, here’s your chance to take an idea and set it up in your country before the competition arrives. In fact, if you’re really smart you’ll tie it into some type of mobile service that allows people to see pictures and vote on them from their mobile phone once they’ve signed up.

Huckabuck Sells

Well, my friend Chris has sold Huckabuck.com finally. This is the meta search engine that I wrote about a few weeks back that was up for sale on eBay. It’s really a great story about the ideas, marketing and business model (or lack thereof) that go into creating a successful web application. You can read about it on Vitamin.

Kudos to Chris for his full disclosure of all the dirty details. 🙂

SightMightyBy the way, Chris is also a White African who grew up in Nigeria and Kenya. We actually went to the same school as little tots at Rosslyn Academy, though he was a year ahead of me and I didn’t know him at the time. He’s a smart guy who is bound for even more success – keep an eye on him. His newest venture is SightMighty – an affiliate website builder.

White African’s Personal Web Graffiti Artist

Someone Hates White African! (oh no!)

Just in case anyone is coming from the RC Bowen Kenya forums, I’d like you to know that I haven’t been writing the racist drivel that has been posted there in my name. I’m not sure why someone would waste there time actually writing it, or why I’ve been the target. Do I have some Kenyan enemy that I never knew existed? Someone has too much time on their hands I guess.

The great thing about the web is anonymity. As easy as it would be for me to ask Mr. Bowen for the IP of the poster to track against the known IPs of people who read my blog, it just isn’t worth it. Anonymity is a quickly fading thing on the web though, so be careful where and how you do your drive-bys in the future, and make sure you pick a target like myself who finds this less insulting than amusing.

The best thing one can do is be thankful that someone thought enough of you to take time out of their day to focus their attentions on you. Will this post cause further drive-bys to happen? Undoubtedly. So, here’s to my personal web graffiti artist. Cheers! (and remember that karma’s a bitch) 🙂

Apple Fighting AIDS in Africa With an iPod?

Interesting… Apple is donating $10 towards the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa for every one of these new red iPods that sells.

Pretty cool looking actually, but a little too bright for my taste. I hope that the organization that they are donating the money to isn’t one of those that uses 80% of their income to pay for westerners salaries, but actually gets something done on the ground in Africa.
