Where Africa and Technology Collide!

Visualizing World Development: Gapminder

Lawrence, the African Uptimist, points us in the direction of a tool called Gapminder. He has a good quick summary of what the tool is and how it works.

…the Gapminder puts development indicators at your fingertips, and enables you to visualize them using a dynamic scatterplotting system where each bubble represents a country…

Make sure you take the time to try the tool out. It has so many scales and variables that you can sort the data by, that you should never run out of fun or interesting combinations. One of my favorite things to do is create an data sort, and then use the “video” option at the bottom to watch how the countries in question have faired over time.

Chad's Internet and Economic Growth over the years

The graph I ran above (as a video) plotted the economic growth of Chad from 1976-2004 alongside the growth of internet users per 1000 people in that country.

Gapminder could be (is) a pretty powerful tool to study economic growth.

AfriGadget: African Solutions to Technological Problems

I’ve been having altogether way to much fun. This weekend I decided to finally get off my rear and create AfriGadget – a website dedicated to showcasing African technological ingenuity. It was something KikuyuMoja and I had been talking about since November 2005, but had never done anything about.

AfriGadget - Solving everyday problems with African Ingenuity

It’s a “team blog”, meaning we need people to join our team so it’s not just us three… 🙂 It’s a fun, on-the-side, type of blog for us and we’d like to have some others who want to do the same. We’re looking for people who can upload pictures (it’s very visual) and show some great/fun/ingenious problem solving for Africans and usually by Africans.

Oh yeah, all authors will get a link back to their blog. That’s some serious linkage for when this thing blows up! (well, one can dream right?)

Kiwi Theme, by the Canvas CreatorsAnyway, AfriGadget was also my chance to try out a GREAT new blogging tool for WordPress that goes by the name Canvas. Those guys have built a tool that allows you to manipulate almost all the elements of your blog without having any PHP knowledge. I used their Kiwi theme and had a great old time. So, a special thanks to the Canvas team for giving me the excuse to do something fun.

Cheeseforge: Budgeting Application

Cheeseforge: Budgeting Made Easy!Nicholas over at Billionaire Businessman has some really exciting news. He’s about to release a public version of a project called Cheeseforge – a slimmed down and manageable finance program.

Think of it as an easier, lighter, friendlier, simpler version of Quickbooks that you use within your browser (think Gmail for finances).

He’s offering a 3-tier pricing structure:

  • A free account for 1-5 users
  • A small company level for 6-20 users that has a powerful analytics function and better user management
  • A premium service for enterprise-level use allowing an unlimited number of users that has better security, branded subdomain, and more user-options

It’s great to see new web applications coming out of Africa. I’m really looking forward to testing it and will do a review once I’ve played around with it a little bit. I’m a big fan of the pricing structure, and I’m set to be impressed by the actual application as well.

Head on over to http://my.cheeseforge.com to sign up for more news and to get on the list to try it out.

Kenya Bound!

So, what does it take to get a bunch of Kenyan bloggers together for some nyama choma, a cold drink and a good chat?

Your friendly white African will be heading back to Kenya for the first couple weeks of July. I’m looking forward to seeing many of the individuals that I’ve come to know through blogs and comments over the last year. Is there some way to schedule a meetup the first weekend in July?

I’m particularly excited about this trip for a couple of reasons that I’ll get into more detail in later posts on. Here’s a short summary:

ZanguMost of you are familiar with the paper I wrote on a web technology for Africa. As you can see from my last post, we are actively developing Zangu News now. I’d like to use the time that I am in East Africa to interview urban and rural Kenyans to find out about their mobile/web activity. Along with that, my goal is to talk to other “tech” people who are actively working on web projects there so that I can better understand the issues they deal with on a daily basis.

Rift Valley Academy Alumni LogoRVA, my alma mater, is having it’s Centennial celebration (yes, that’s 100 years folks). I run the RVA Alumni website, and appreciate the school and the network it provides. I plan on being a part of this historic event.

I hope that I can meet many of you when I visit Kenya (and possibly Tanzania and Rwanda). Please shoot me an email if you would like to get together while I’m in town. I still think a big meetup with large slabs of meat and cold drinks sounds best!

African News for Africans by Africans – Zangu News Beta Signups Begin

Zangu News - Beta Signups BeginMany of you either know about, or have read, the paper I wrote called A Web Technology Idea for Africa back in March. Since that time, I’ve been working with Thakadu of Muti and News Map fame to develop the news portion of that idea – it drives our focus.

In summary, we believe that the web can truly impact Africans in a profound way. The trick is to make the social power of the web available to them through both the internet and mobile phones. Mobile phones being the most common technological platform that Africans have access to since the mobile explosion on the continent started in the mid-1990s.

Zangu is the platform that we are creating to make that vision into a reality. Our first phase is “news”, which will be followed by “community” and “search”. Our goal with the prototype of Zangu News is to bring both traditional and user-generated news (ie: blogs), to the masses in an organized way. Our first step is to make it available on the web, then integrate that with the mobile component.

We’ve got some great ideas that we’re testing now to make sure that the news is fresh and relevant each time you visit. Both Thakadu and I (Erik Hersman) are very excited about where the application is going, and can’t wait for it to be ready to actually test.

At this moment we are allowing people to sign up to be Beta testers of Zangu News. This early sign up group will be notified of when the Beta testing will begin and will be an integral part of making it work. We also look for feedback on making this application uniquely African, and know that the feedback from the African digerati will be very important.

African News: Mapped

Wow, I’m extremely impressed! Thakadu, a frequent visitor here and friend, has come out with a nice Google Maps and Yahoo News mashup that he’s simply calling News Map. Basically, he’s broken down the the finding of current news stories by country into the easiest common denominator – geography.

Find Your News by Clicking on a Country

It’s actually much more than African news being mapped, it’s international. However, since it was created by someone within the African digerati circle, I took creative license in the title to this post.

Thakadu is also the creator of Muti, an African news aggregator. It takes submissions from registered users (much like Reddit and Digg), and stories go up or down depending upon how much they are read and voted on.

White African T-shirts

So, I’ve been having a little bit of fun today. I created a couple White African t-shirts. I’m using Zazzle, who I have written about in the past. I’m optimistic about this t-shirt being better than my last (due to a simple design and my optimistic nature believing that they have improved their services).

The t-shirts aren’t cheap… they start around $15 for the white ones. The best part is that they are totally customizable. Meaning, you could add whatever text you want, change the color or even remove the image. Not to mention all of the different men’s, women’s and children’s styles.

Note: If you are one of those random individuals who purchases one, make sure you pick either white or a dark colored shirt. For some reason the design doesn’t work right on the light colored shirts.

What’s the Value of Your Domain?

WhiteAfrican.com Domain ValueHave you ever wondered what your domain might be worth (if you own it, that is)? If you’re on blogger or myspace, or some other hosted website, I’m sorry but you probably don’t own your domain and are out of luck with this.

Well, I came across LeapFish, which will do a free domain name appraisal for you. It’s based of of a number of values, and seems to come back a little inflated. I did a bunch of the domains that I own, some active, some inactive and they all seemed to come back a little more than I thought they were worth.

The truth is that domain value is really grown. Sure, there is inherent value in a short domain name that is a real word, but the exponential value comes from the content and community of people who link to you and grow your domain.

Here’s a fun exercise for you, enter your organization’s domain name and see it’s value. If you have one with a million links in from Google, you’ll find it’s probably appraised at a couple hundred thousand dollars.

Google Trends: East Africa

Google TrendsI thought I might have a little fun with Google’s new Google Trends tool. Basically, it allows you to search for any term, or combination of terms and see what the search and news volume is on it. It could actually be a pretty interesting marketing tool if it gave out some more information.

My test was using the terms, “Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania, Somalia, Uganda”.

East Africa Country Trends on Google

As you can see from the results, Kenya is much more consistently on people’s minds than any other country. Also note, there was a big spike in interest on Sudan in early 2005 (Darfur?).

However, notice that the lower graph shows that Sudan is the country in the news more than any other.

Zookoda: Email for Bloggers

Zookoda: Email for BloggersAfter reviewing and Beta testing many different types of web applications, one can become jaded. I have to say that Zookoda has knocked me out of that phase completely. They have created an email application for bloggers that is truly amazing and should definitely be tried by all bloggers.

Sometimes those of us on the front-end of web technology forget that most people don’t know what RSS is and how to use it. It makes sense to offer your blog in an email format. How about a way to send the newest post after it is written? Or maybe you’d like more control and will only send a monthly email that covers a summary of all your posts for that month? Easily done with Zookoda.

A rundown of capabilities:

  • Manage email newsletter subscribers
  • Enhance your blog with custom newsletter subscription forms
  • Design eye-catching newletters to match your blog design
  • Schedule recurring broadcasts for each day, week or month
  • View real-time open, bounce, click and unsubscribe reports
  • Access mobile users by emailing blog content in text format

If you operate on the Blogger platform, you’ll be happy to find out that all of the normal templates are already there for you to send your email out in. If you have a custom design, with a little extra work you can duplicate that look through Zookoda’s template editor.

In summary, there are a couple of “email your blog post” applications on the market (Feedburner & Squeet come to mind). Zookoda blows them away in terms of functionality and features.
